Breaking News: Ja Morant Invests $5.6 Million to Turn Mansion Into School for Homeless Youth in Memphis
In a powerful demonstration of community commitment, Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has announced a $5.6 million personal investment to convert a historic Memphis mansion into a residential school for homeless and at-risk youth. The project, officially named the “Rise Up Academy,” aims to open its doors in early 2026 and will provide housing, education, mental health services, and life skills training for some of the city’s most vulnerable children.
The 25-year-old NBA All-Star revealed the initiative during a press conference held outside the 1920s-era mansion that will be transformed into the academy’s campus. Morant, known for his electric play on the court and growing leadership off it, described the project as “one of the most important things I’ll ever do.”
“This city gave me everything,” Morant said. “It showed me love from day one. Now I want to give something back that lasts. These kids deserve a real chance — not just a roof over their heads, but people who believe in them, a path forward, and the tools to walk it.”
A Vision Beyond Basketball
Rise Up Academy will initially house and support up to 60 students, with plans to expand capacity within five years. The school will serve youth between the ages of 12 and 18 who are homeless, in unstable housing situations, or have aged out of foster care. In addition to academic programming, the academy will offer trauma-informed counseling, sports and arts enrichment, and mentorship programs led by local leaders, athletes, and volunteers.
The academy’s curriculum will be developed in collaboration with Memphis City Schools and several educational nonprofits, with an emphasis on individualized learning, emotional support, and college or career preparation. Meals, clothing, and personal care items will also be provided to every student free of charge.
From Dream to Reality
The idea for Rise Up Academy reportedly took shape during Morant’s own recovery time following his NBA suspension in 2023. Sources close to Morant say he spent much of that period reflecting on his role as a public figure, particularly in Memphis — a city grappling with high poverty rates and youth homelessness.
“Ja had options. He could’ve walked away, moved somewhere else, or just kept to basketball,” said longtime friend and business partner Davonte Pack. “But he told us, ‘If I’m going to be a leader, it’s got to mean something.’ And now it does.”
