The creation of the statue involved a personal connection to the university’s community. Terry Smith, Jr., a former sprinter for the U of L track and field team, served as the model for the sculpture. Smith’s similar build to Lyles allowed artist Ed Hamilton to accurately capture the essence of the legendary athlete. Smith spent several weeks posing for the statue, a process that deepened his appreciation for Lyles’ contributions to the university .
