‘I don’t know how’: BBC pundit left baffled by what 22-year-old Tottenham player did against Bournemouth

And there is no question that Bryan Gil should have added his name to the scoresheet late on. The Spaniard found himself a couple of yards out with an open goal to aim for as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg knocked the ball across to him.

Gil however, managed to head the ball onto the crossbar, and the chance slipped through his grasp. As the game continued, the 22-year-old just stayed down, clearly devastated by the miss.

“I’ve still got my hand over my mouth. How has he missed there? He’s on the goalline. It’s really good play from Son and Hojbjerg on that left-hand side. Son cuts inside. Everyone thinks he’s going to shoot. He puts a reverse pass back to his left-hand side where Hojbjerg is, who takes another touch basically on the goalline, cuts it back, and Gil, I don’t know how he’s missed. He’s on the goalline, he’s headed it up and it’s hit the bar,” he said.

“He’s a yard outside, but he’s in the middle of the goal and he’s arching back. I’m trying to help him out here. The ball from Hojbjerg is just to his left. He’s trying to head it, but he’s hit the bar. I don’t know how he’s missed.”

Big moment in winger’s Spurs career

It would have been a big moment for the youngster had he managed to score. Gil is yet to open his account for Tottenham. So it would have been another plus on the day Spurs secured a big win and also welcomed Rodrigo Bentancur back from injury.

The Spain international’s Tottenham career has been incredibly stop-start. He has left on loan in each of the last two January transfer windows.

It remains to be seen what Ange Postecoglou has planned for Gil this time around. Given how many injuries Tottenham are dealing with, they may be reluctant to lose any outfield players in the coming weeks.

But if Gil does stick around, he is surely going to have to be a lot more clinical if he finds himself in a similar situation again.
