It is an exclamation that no doubt echoed the thoughts of watching Liverpool supporters – and Jurgen Klopp.

“Imagine a fully-fit Ben Doak!” enthused Scotland under-21 boss Scot Gemmill having witnessed the Liverpool winger terrorise Spain on his first start for the team in their UEFA European U21 Championship qualifier on Monday night.

“It was an exceptional performance from Ben Doak. I would even add that’s there more to come from him. He’s not fully match fit at the moment because of his limited minutes as he is playing for such a good club.

“I thought it was a really top performance and hopefully everyone saw that.”

That Gemmill doesn’t regard the 17-year-old as being fully fit isn’t in reference to any injury concerns for Klopp. Instead, it is a nod to the amount of minutes the player has managed this season as he straddles the tricky divide between first-team fringes and playing time with the Academy.

Not surprisingly with Mohamed Salah his main competition for a place on the right side of Klopp’s impressive attack for Liverpool this season, Doak has found his appearances limited.

Liverpool start ‘due diligence’ on January transfer as race intensifies for £12m defender

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are one of five Premier League clubs to hold an interest in PSV Eindhoven forward Johan Bakayoko and have even begun conducting their “due diligence” over a potential January swoop.

The Reds had been tentatively linked with a move for Bakayoko in August, but the Reds opted against strengthening their frontline with Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez all at Anfield.

But with Al-Ittihad turning on the charm offensive in pursuit of luring Salah to the Saudi Pro League in 2024, Football Insider suggests the Reds could move for the Belgium international at the turn of the year.

The 24-year-old, who came close to joining Brentford last month, is contracted at the Philips Arena until 2026.
