Michael Owen says that while he is a fan of Dominic Solanke, Tottenham Hotspur have taken a risk by spending such a big fee on the striker.

Spurs needed a top-class number nine to lead the line, with Richarlison having spent a significant amount of time on the treatment table last season, forcing Ange Postecoglou to deploy Son Heung-min through the middle on many occasions.
The Lilywhites thus decided to break their transfer record to sign Solanke, parting ways with £65m to bring the centre-forward through the door.
While the Englishman is arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the back of an outstanding season for Bournemouth, the price target has raised some eyebrows.

Solanke is actually worth £35m, says Michael Owen
Owen sees Solanke as a perfect fit for Tottenham, insisting that the 26-year-old has all the attributes to do well in Postecoglou’s system. However, the former Manchester United and Liverpool striker feels that Spurs overpaid for the newcomer.

When asked about Tottenham’s capture of Solanke, the pundit told Premier League Productions (19/08 at 7:10 pm): “It’s promising, it’s exciting. Last season was a very good one for him. He’s got attributes we feel that would suit Spurs.
“When I first heard Solanke to Spurs. I thought ‘yeah, I like that. I see that’, but then I heard about the fee and I thought ‘oh, that’s chunky. I thought that’s quite heavy’. I thought he might be a £30-35 million player.
“But hey, if they wanted, were desperate for him and they needed someone in that position. He is proven in the Premier League. Proven to score goals.
“He works hard off the ball. There are a lot of boxes that he is ticking. He’s not an unknown signing. A risky signing. So, I do like the signing, I just thought it was a little bit pricey.”

There is a dearth of top-class number nines at the highest level, and in Solanke, Spurs were not only getting a homegrown option but also a player with Premier League experience and one who fits their system perfectly. So all in all, it could prove to be money well spent.
