Wenyen Gabriel spent last season with the Los Angeles Lakers and was a very solid role player off the bench.
The 26-year-old played in a career-high 68 regular season games and averaged 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest while shooting 59.6% from the field.
In addition, the Lakers made the Western Conference Finals and Gabriel appeared in ten NBA playoff games.
This summer, he became a free agent, and it’s now been announced that he has signed a deal with the Boston Celtics.
Via The Celtics: “The Boston Celtics announced today that the team has signed center Wenyen Gabriel. Per team policy, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.”
The Celtics recently traded Robert Williams III in the blockbuster deal that landed them NBA Champion Jrue Holiday.
Therefore, the addition of Gabriel gives them depth at the power forward/center position.
Initially, he went undrafted in 2018 after playing two seasons of college basketball for the Kentucky Wildcats.
In addition to the Lakers, Gabriel has also spent time with the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers, Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers and New Orleans Pelicans over four seasons in the league.
His career averages are 4.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest while shooting 53.1% from the field and 31.9% from the three-point range in 145 regular season games (he has also appeared in 14 NBA playoff games).
As for the Celtics, they are coming off a year where they made the Eastern Conference Finals (they lost to the Miami Heat in Game 7).
