Everton are already in talks to sign free agent who scored 22 league goals last season

Everton made one of their most successful transfers in recent history just two summers ago, when they welcomed in James Tarkowski for nothing.

Swooping at the expiry of his contract at Burnley, it would not take long for him to be reunited with former boss Sean Dyche, who has since developed the 31-year-old into even more of a monster than he already was.

He is a titanic central defender, and paramount to everything good the Toffees do.

Well, Kevin Thelwell is clearly trying to repeat that feat at the other end of the pitch, with an in-form striker having now come available for free.

The latest on Everton’s transfer plans comes courtesy of Tipsbladet, via Sport Witness, who claim that Everton are one of many clubs now trying to sign Martin Braithwaite.

Having enjoyed an outstanding season with Espanyol, it seems that his fine form has prevented the Spanish side from extending his current deal.

That decision could benefit Thelwell though, who will be licking his lips at the prospect of such a cut-price deal to add depth to a position that remains unsettled at Goodison Park.

It is said that Everton, Leicester City and Southampton are all already talking to Braithwaite about a potential move, with his contract actually expiring on July 15th.

The report writes that this mass interest puts him in an ‘extremely favourable position,’ and he clearly has a tough decision to make regarding all this intrigue.

Given the risks involved should Everton sign Armando Broja, it is quite refreshing to see this alternative be so without risk.

And whilst acquiring the 33-year-old striker would hardly provide a long-term striking solution, it is certainly worth bringing in such an in-form option even if it is on just a one or two-year deal, to see what goals they can squeeze out of him.

After all, this veteran marksman has enjoyed a long and storied career, with spells at Middlesbrough and Barcelona highlighting the vast changes he has undergone in the last decade.

It is his work with his current club, Espanyol, that has recently drawn acclaim though, having scored 32 goals in just 78 appearances, and helping them return to La Liga at the first time of asking last season.

He fired in 22 goals in the Segunda División as they beat Real Oviedo in the play-off final, yet with an expiring contract, finds himself in limbo.

Thelwell could offer him the perfect end to his career, returning to England to star in the Premier League either as a backup to Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Beto.
