Newcastle United are reportedly preparing to make an offer for one of the most promising defenders in European football, amidst speculation that several current Magpies players could be leaving St James Park. According to reports from the Daily Telegraph, there is intensified talk of a swap deal involving Gambia international Minteh, Newcastle academy graduate Elliot Anderson, and Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga. This flurry of activity to initiate player movements comes shortly after the Premier League warned clubs, including Newcastle, about the risks of fraudulent player transfers involving swap deals.
Looking ahead to the new profit and sustainability period starting in July, Newcastle has identified several targets as they seek to rebound from last season’s disappointment of missing out on European qualification. They have already secured Chelsea youngster Lewis Hall on a permanent deal, signed Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer, and are progressing towards acquiring Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. According to reports from Portugal, Newcastle are preparing a bold bid for Benfica center-back Antonio Silva, who has attracted interest from top clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City due to his impressive performances for both club and country over the past year. The 20-year-old is currently with the Portuguese national team and is hopeful of contributing as they face Slovenia in their Euro 2016 campaign.
Having debuted for Benfica at just 18, Silva earned praise from former teammate Jan Vertonghen for his partnership with Nicolas Otamendi, with Vertonghen stating, “Otamendi is having a fantastic season. Despite his age, he remains very strong and crucial, a true leader as shown in the World Cup. Initially, he paired with Morato this season, a good player, but due to injuries they had to put in young Antonio Silva, who could become a legend.
