All the latest Newcastle United news as Anthony Gordon reflects on his growth at St James’ Park since leaving Everton
Anthony Gordon has reflected on his development since joining Newcastle United from Everton just under a year ago.
The 22-year-old igned for the Magpies from Everton during the January 2023 transfer window. The deal could cost Newcastle as much as £45m.
However, with seven goals and a further five assists to his name across 20 Premier League appearances for Newcastle so far this season, Gordon is proving to be yet another shrewd signing by the club.
The Merseyside-born wide player is now knocking on the door of England boss Gareth Southgate ahead of a potential call-up amidst his strong form in black and white, which he now attributes to his growth as a player since making the switch from the Toffees last year.
“The standards here, from day one, really surprised me,” Gordon said to Rio Ferdinand in an interview on TNT Sport. “From when I first joined, it took me a while to adapt to those standards but through being around the players and everything that was going on, I’ve just got better and better.”
Ferdinand then showed Gordon clips from his time at Everton, where he added: “That’s actually annoying to watch now! I was at Everton and had Frank Lampard, who was an unbelievable goalscorer. He gave me all the right information to get in them positions. I probably wasn’t mature enough at that time to take on the advice and go and do it.”
Gordon had another strong showing in Newcastle’s latest outing, as he scored the second goal in their first half comeback against Manchester City on Saturday. Sadly for the home crowd at St James’ Park, the game finished 3-2 to Pep Guardiola’s side after Kevin De Bruyne and Oscar Bobb struck.
