“Experts Weigh In: Settlement Unlikely in Manchester City’s Financial Fair Play Case”
Manchester City are preparing for a full hearing regarding their alleged 115 Financial Fair Play (FFP) violations, with clubs such as Nottingham Forest keenly observing the situation.
The Premier League charged City in February 2023, mainly focusing on their activities between 2009 and 2018. The key issues involve the financial information provided to the league about payments to players and managers.
Moreover, the Premier League asserts that City did not fully cooperate with the investigation. Despite these accusations, Pep Guardiola’s team has consistently claimed their innocence, stating they have evidence to support their case.
However, this evidence has not been presented to the Premier League yet due to a delay in scheduling a hearing. The hearing is anticipated to take place later this year, with a verdict expected by summer 2025.
This delay has fueled speculation that the Premier League and City might pursue an out-of-court settlement to prevent further delays. However, there is concern that clubs like Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, and Arsenal might feel justice hasn’t been served if a settlement occurs before a hearing, especially since Everton and Nottingham Forest had their cases fully heard.
Avoiding another breach of the Profitability and Sustainability Rules is a priority for Nottingham Forest this summer. Nuno emphasized earlier this year that lessons must be learned from last season’s four-point deduction for violating the regulations.
“To not repeat the same mistakes. This is life. You learn from your own mistakes,” he said last month regarding what the club needed to take away from the entire episode.
The uncertainty around the deduction and its impact on Forest’s survival fight was one of the “distractions” Nuno and his squad faced last season. They aim to avoid a similar situation in the 2024/25 season.
This means hard work and tough decisions are ahead as the Reds strive to balance their finances, with the June 30 deadline for the next PSR assessment period fast approaching.
On BBC Radio Manchester’s podcast ‘We’re Not Really Here,’ football finance expert Kieran Maguire and former City financial advisor Stefan Borson discussed the possibility of a settlement. Maguire remarked, “It would certainly save a lot of money for both sides.”
He continued, “Both parties could claim a victory, but considering public opinion and likely reactions from the media and other clubs, it’s not something that would be palatable to either the Premier League or City.”
Borson added, “There are ways it could be done within Premier League rules.”
However, he pointed out, “But I think they missed their window for a settlement. Now that it’s public and we’re so close to the hearing, it’s very unlikely they will find common ground politically to settle this.”
