Mubarak Wakaso: A Journey Through Twelve Clubs in Eight Years After Celtic Loan Spell
Former Celtic loanee Mubarak Wakaso played for twelve clubs in eight years following his return to Rubin Kazan after an unremarkable season at Parkhead.
The Ghanaian winger, capped 70 times, is now a free agent after leaving Chinese side Shenzhen FC, where he had moved from Jiangsu Suning in April 2021.
Wakaso was one of Ronny Deila’s first signings for Celtic in the summer of 2014, joining on a season-long loan from Rubin Kazan. He had a strong start with a stunning goal in a 2-2 draw with Red Bull Salzburg in a Europa League match but made only 10 more appearances for Celtic and scored no other goals.
The 34-year-old moved to China in the summer of 2020 after three years at Alaves in La Liga, where he scored just once. His previous clubs include Elche, Villarreal, Espanyol, Las Palmas, Panathinaikos, and Granada.
In March 2015, it was reported that Wakaso would likely return to Rubin Kazan at the end of his Celtic loan. Despite limited game time, Wakaso remained optimistic about making a significant impact. He made a brief comeback as a substitute in a surprising 1-0 loss to St Johnstone at Parkhead in March 2015, after participating in the African Cup of Nations where Ghana finished second.
Reflecting on his career, Wakaso acknowledged the unpredictable nature of football and expressed his readiness to contribute whenever possible. However, despite a promising start, his stint with Celtic did not meet expectations.
