“Heroic Effort: Fabian Schar Plays Through Broken Nose in Switzerland’s EURO 2024 Draw with Scotland”
Newcastle United star Fabian Schar played over 70 minutes with a broken nose on Wednesday evening as Switzerland drew 1-1 with Scotland in their Group A match at EURO 2024.
Schar played the full 90 minutes for the second consecutive match, following Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Hungary, but his night did not go as smoothly as his first appearance in the tournament.
The 32-year-old’s evening started poorly when, at 13 minutes, he accidentally deflected Scott McTominay’s shot past Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer into the net.
Things got worse for Schar in the 19th minute when he collided with Celtic full-back Anthony Ralston while contesting a header, resulting in a broken nose.
Despite the injury, Schar completed the match, but it is uncertain if he will be fit to play in Switzerland’s final group game against Germany. Swiss publication SRF reported that Schar will undergo further tests before a decision is made about his fitness for Sunday’s game.
Schar’s injury brought to mind Kylian Mbappe’s recent incident. The France star suffered a similar injury 48 hours earlier when he collided with Austrian defender Kevin Danso’s shoulder while challenging for a header, resulting in a misaligned nose.
Mbappe was treated at a hospital and has avoided immediate surgery. It is still unclear whether his broken nose will prevent him from playing in France’s remaining group games against the Netherlands and Poland.
The Real Madrid forward humorously asked fans on X for suggestions on where to find a protective mask for France’s upcoming fixtures.
Switzerland, with Schar, currently sit second in Group A with four points after two games and are in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages of EURO 2024, regardless of their result against Germany in the final group match on Sunday.
