“Van Hecke Backs Verbruggen Amid Criticism, Highlights Dutch Keeper’s Strengths”
Brighton and Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke has strongly defended his teammate Bart Verbruggen, dismissing recent criticisms as unfounded.
In an interview with De Telegraaf, Van Hecke praised Verbruggen, who is currently excelling for the Netherlands at Euro 2024. Verbruggen was instrumental in their opening victory against Poland, making a crucial save that ensured the team secured all three points in their tournament opener in Germany.
This performance highlights Verbruggen’s swift ascent in the sport, from debuting at Anderlecht to becoming a key player there, moving to Brighton in a significant transfer, establishing himself as their first-choice goalkeeper, and now earning the role of the Netherlands’ number one under Ronald Koeman.
Verbruggen has mostly received acclaim for his displays with both Brighton and the Netherlands, with some even comparing his potential to that of Manuel Neuer. However, analyst Johan Derksen recently criticized his ability to handle crosses.
Van Hecke, however, completely disagrees, praising his teammate and asserting that the criticism is baseless.
“He is a very versatile goalkeeper with few weaknesses,” Van Hecke said.
“He exudes calm, plays well with the ball at his feet, and has excellent reflexes. Additionally, as required at Brighton, he plays forward, intercepting deep balls from opponents.
“He varies his passes well between long and short. I believe he is strong at handling corners and aerial balls.
“In my opinion, Bart is very strong on crosses, even on withdrawn balls, as he defends his goal aggressively and isn’t afraid to challenge for the ball.”
