“Appointment Controversy: Rovereto Nayacalevu’s Role at FRU Under Scrutiny”.
Before assuming his position at RugbyHouse, new FRU Chief Executive Officer Rovereto Nayacalevu resigned as acting Permanent Secretary for Fisheries and Forestry, according to Fiji Rugby Union Trustees Chair Peter Mazey. Speaking with FBC Sports, Mazey claims that Public Service Commission chair Luke Rokovada gave him the confirmation. Mazey claims that he spoke with Rokovada over the phone about the matter as well.
Nayacalevu, he continues, is also wrapping off a project at the Ministry of Forestry and Fisheries. Following Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru’s statement that he has not yet received formal advice regarding Nayacalevu’s appointment, the Chair of the FRU Trustees made the remarks.
As Nayacalevu has not yet submitted his resignation to the PSC, Saukuru affirms that he is still serving as the acting PS for Fisheries and Forestry while speaking to the media in Labasa today.
“They did not notify me in advance of the changes taking place in the Fiji Rugby Union, such as the appointment of a CEO, which hasn’t happened, and they openly declared that Rovereto is taking over the CEO positions without our knowledge. People have been questioning this because the PSC chairman also commented on it, stating that he hasn’t received any resignation from Rovereto, so it’s on them (FRU) to fix it, not my ministry.”
He asserts that the onus now rests on the FRU board to address the issues that have been raised by the public announcement of the new CEO appointment. The head of the FRU trustees is the appropriate person to ask, he says. The former 7s representative began working in his new position last Thursday.
