Jaylen Brown Wins Bill Russell Trophy, Leading Celtics to 18th Championship
BOSTON — For the first time, the Bill Russell Trophy has been awarded to a player from the team Russell made legendary.
The NBA Finals MVP, named in honor of Russell since 2009, a year after the Celtics last won the championship, was presented to Jaylen Brown following Boston’s 18th Championship victory with a 106-88 win over the Mavericks at TD Garden on Monday.
“Bill Russell would be so proud,” as he handed the trophy to Brown.
Brown averaged 20.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.0 assists throughout the series, and he posted 21 points, eight rebounds, and six assists in the decisive Game 5.
He narrowly beat out his teammate Jayson Tatum, who recorded 31 points, 11 assists, and eight rebounds in Game 5.
Brown now joins an esteemed group of Boston Celtics players who have won the NBA Finals MVP award, which has been awarded since 1969, including:
