“Newcastle Poised for Windfall as Brentford Reject Tottenham’s £40m Toney Bid”
Brentford have reportedly turned down an offer for England international Ivan Toney, as Newcastle United monitor the situation regarding their former player.
During his three years at St James’ Park, Toney made only four senior appearances, spending most of his time on loan at clubs like Barnsley, Wigan Athletic, and Scunthorpe United. A permanent move to Peterborough United in August 2018 allowed him to flourish, where he scored 49 goals in 15 appearances over two years, catching Brentford’s attention. The Bees then signed him in a deal worth an initial £5 million, with potential add-ons totaling another £5 million based on performance.
Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed that Newcastle included a sell-on clause in Toney’s transfer to Peterborough, ensuring future payments to Newcastle from any subsequent sales. He explained on the Hard Truth podcast that Newcastle initially wanted to loan Toney, but Peterborough preferred a permanent deal with a 30% sell-on clause instead of Newcastle’s requested 50%. Peterborough paid Newcastle £350,000 over three years and have so far received £10 million from Brentford, with further profits and subsequent Newcastle shares anticipated from future transfers.
Currently, Toney is representing England at Euro 2024, but speculation about his future persists, with interest from clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur of that Premier League trio, it is Tottenham Hotspur that reportedly had their initial offer for the striker turned down. Football Transfers revealed that Brentford rejected a £40 million bid for Ivan Toney, despite him agreeing to a wage offer from the North London club. The report also stated that Brentford is seeking £65 million for Toney but would accept a bid of around £55 million.
