“Buffalo Bills Support Inclusivity with New LGBTQ Flag Football League”
The Buffalo Bills are launching a new gay flag football league in collaboration with the National Gay Flag Football League (NGFFL).
“We are excited to bring inclusive flag football to Buffalo with the support of the Buffalo Bills. This initiative will join 27 other cities and involve over 4,000 players, including straight allies, in the NGFFL,” stated Joel Horton, the NGFFL Commissioner.
The Bills are the latest NFL team to back a local LGBTQ flag football league. The New England Patriots have a long-standing partnership with the Boston league, the Los Angeles Rams helped establish a local league, and teams like the New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks are active supporters of their local leagues.
“We are thrilled to align with the NFL and other clubs in supporting the NGFFL,” said Michelle Roberts, Buffalo Bills Vice President of Community Impact. “Through our sponsorship, we aim to enhance the NGFFL’s presence in our community.”
Despite ongoing criticism from anti-gay voices, major sports continue to build inclusive initiatives for the LGBTQ community.
Before the NGFFL was officially formed, the first national gay flag football league event, Gay Bowl I, took place in Southern California in 2002 with teams from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston. Gay Bowl II in San Francisco soon followed, adding teams from Atlanta, Chicago, and San Diego, leading to the establishment of the NGFFL.
The NFL is increasingly interested in flag football, seeing it as a way to broaden the appeal of the sport.
