“Kieran Trippier Applauds Newcastle Star Amidst Heartbreaking Injury Woes”
Trippier and Burn joined Newcastle United in January 2022 when the Magpies were on the brink of relegation to the Championship. As some of the first signings after the club’s takeover the previous October, they were crucial in steering the team away from relegation danger.
Ultimately, Newcastle avoided relegation comfortably, and Trippier and Burn were instrumental in securing Champions League qualification the following season. That January transfer window, which also saw the arrivals of Matt Targett, Chris Wood, and Bruno Guimaraes, was a pivotal period at St James’ Park, laying the groundwork for their significant progress the next year.
Speaking on the Overlap, Trippier praised the club’s recruitment strategy, his manager, and Burn, whom he called a ‘great leader’: “When I first signed, we were facing a tough moment,” Trippier said. “We lost to Cambridge in my first game, but there was a sense of belief. We signed good characters like Dan Burn, a great leader and a Geordie who would give his all in any situation.
Matt Targett, myself, and Bruno, who has been remarkable, were also great additions. It was about bringing in the right characters for the team and the squad.”
He continued: “The players we signed were perfect for that season. Unfortunately, I broke my foot and was devastated, but the team’s performance was incredible. The manager sets high standards and demands respect for everyone, from staff to kitmen. He sets the tone and expects a lot from me to support the players around me.”
Trippier played the full 90 minutes in England’s opening game of Euro 2024 against Serbia on Sunday, filling in at left-back with Luke Shaw out due to injury.
