Amadou Onana, a midfielder for Belgium, playfully yelled at a reporter during the team’s opening Euro 2024 match against Slovakia, calling him “Andre.” After an early goal from Ivan Schranz, Slovakia cruised to a historic triumph at the cost of Belgium in their opening group match of the tournament.
Romelu Lukaku had given Belgium two goals, but VAR had stepped in to throw out the first goal and, using never-before-seen ball tech, the second.
The Everton midfielder Onana was one of the best players for the Group E favorites despite the loss, winning more duels than anybody else on the field.
Before VAR intervened, Onana believed he had helped Belgium equalize when Lukaku crossed the goal line with his cross-goal attempt. The 22-year-old, who Sean Dyche doesn’t always like at Everton, has become as a vital member of the Belgium midfield in recent years.
Following the dismal outcome, Onana went to the mixed zone to field questions from the media. However, he was not impressed when a reporter called him “Andre” after his time.
The midfielder for Belgium quickly translated from French to correct the British reporter in a harsh but humble reaction.
“Andre is not even my name, mate,” the midfield player said with an English accent that was hilariously good. Even with his obvious lack of professionalism in mispronouncing his name, Onana took the time to respond to the reporter’s inquiries.
Everton is hoping to cash in on their most prized asset, Onana, and Arsenal are interested in signing him this summer.
On social media, Joe Thomas, the Everton journalist for the Liverpool Echo, verified Arsenal’s interest: “New: Everton midfielder Amadou Onana’s availability has been enquired about by Arsenal.” More will come.
