Prior to making the St James’ Park transition, Lloyd Kelly, a newcomer to Newcastle United, said he sounded out Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes. When the 25-year-old’s contract with Bournemouth expires later this month, he will officially become Eddie Howe’s first summer acquisition on a free transfer. Five years ago, Kelly was signed by the Cherries for £13 million by the Toon manager.
The long-term injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles make the former England youth international an invaluable defensive addition. Kelly’s versatility as a left- or center-back will benefit Newcastle, especially with Paul Dummett departing.
Kelly spent time at Bournemouth and the youth levels of England, so he is already acquainted with a number of Toon players. In an interview with the team’s media channel, he disclosed that talks with Wilson and Barnes completed the transaction.
Kelly remarked, “(I spoke to) a few of the players that I knew previously.” Harvey Barnes and Calum Wilson, with whom I played in the England setup. I spoke with the two players that were mentioned.
Kelly also revealed Newcastle’s probable goals for the 2024–25 season. The Magpies have no edge over any European team in their attempt to duplicate Howe’s first full season in charge.
“It’s a big step for me personally, but I’m ready for the challenge,” he continued. “I’m sure the supporters will want to see the team qualify for the Champions League the following season. When I saw the previous games, they looked absurd. additionally having the ability to place higher in the league.
