The Dallas Cowboys have identified a potential landing spot for former Super Bowl champion free agent Cam Akers this summer. Reports indicate the team, known as America’s team, is considering adding another running back despite signing several during the offseason. With Tony Pollard moving on to the Titans, the Cowboys aimed to replenish their backfield playmakers. They succeeded in retaining Ezekiel Elliott and have Rico Dowdle as a solid backup option.
Seeking cost-effective additions, the Cowboys were open to signing any available running back. Royce Freeman is also in the mix, competing with Deuce Vaughn for the third spot, though Vaughn is being tried out at receiver. Executive Vice President Stephen Jones emphasizes year-round talent acquisition, suggesting the Cowboys may add another running back to enhance competition before the season begins.
According to Bleacher Report, notable names like Dalvin Cook, Kareem Hunt, and Latavius Murray remain on the market, but Akers seems a realistic option due to concerns over his injury history, making him potentially available at a bargain veteran-minimum contract.
Despite not selecting a running back in this year’s draft, Dallas appears focused on exploring available options to support Elliott, whose role is evolving. Akers could emerge as a primary option for the Cowboys this season.

The Ravens are entrusting their new running back, Derrick Henry, with a heavy workload, a risky strategy given their recent history of running back injuries. Despite their durability concerns, the Ravens opted not to retain these players and instead signed a more resilient back.
However, Henry himself has a history of injuries, so signing Cam Akers wouldn’t pose much risk. While Akers lacks durability, he could provide the Ravens with another viable option, potentially serving as a rotational back following Keaton Mitchell’s serious injury last year.
Turning to the New Orleans Saints, although they don’t have a pressing need at running back, there have been trade rumors involving Alvin Kamara. With Jamaal Williams backing up Kamara, adding Akers wouldn’t entail much risk but would offer an affordable option for the third spot. While Akers may not have starting potential, he could serve as a rotational piece, especially if the Saints consider trading Kamara.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers under Jim Harbaugh are emphasizing their running game this season, potentially relying on Dobbins and Edwards, both of whom have injury histories. Akers shares this concern, but if all three running backs recover fully, they could form a formidable trio. The Chargers could benefit from rotating these backs to manage workload and mitigate injury risks.
In Kansas City, despite questions surrounding Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s effectiveness compared to Jerick McKinnon, the Chiefs opted to retain Edwards-Helaire. With McKinnon not returning, Akers emerges as a practical choice. While not a standout on paper, Akers could contribute his Super Bowl experience to bolster Kansas City’s backfield depth behind starter Isiah Pacheco, who is projected to lead for the foreseeable future.
