“Agent Quickly Quashes Speculation on Rangers’ £5 Million Deal”.
Almost as soon as rumors began circulating, the agent for Rangers’ £5 million player stepped in to quash the speculation.
This brings some clarity to the future of one player in Philippe Clement’s squad at a time when many of his teammates are either departing or might soon leave. Rangers confirmed on June 1st that John Lundstram, Ryan Jack, Jon McLaughlin, and Kemar Roofe would all be leaving Ibrox when their contracts expire. Borna Barisic, a 2021 title winner under Steven Gerrard, is also set to leave after six years with the club.
Barisic’s departure, with Trabzonspor likely to be his next destination, has fueled concerns among Rangers fans about the possibility of Ridvan Yilmaz also leaving. Yilmaz, who has significantly improved since Clement’s arrival, seems poised for a major role, especially after the signing of fellow left-back Jefte Vital from Fluminense.
Thus, the comments from Yilmaz’s agent earlier this week, decisively dismissing a potential return to Turkey, are a welcome reassurance for the supporters.
Rangers plan to retain Ridvan Yilmaz this summer.
“Ridvan’s career plan is to continue in Europe,” Yilmaz’s agent, Necdet Ergezen, told reporter Gokmen Ozcan. “There is no intention to return to the Super League in the near or medium term.”
Yilmaz displaced the long-serving Borna Barisic as Rangers’ top left-back at the beginning of the year, finally demonstrating the potential that led the Glasgow club to invest significantly in him during the summer of 2022.
“The little man has made a huge impression ever since the winter break and has secured the left-back position for himself,” legendary captain Barry Ferguson told the Daily Record in the spring.
“He’s taken some time to adapt, which can happen with any young player moving to a new country. But he’s now a proper Rangers player.”
Rangers are now looking to bring in another left-footed defender, Thomas Galdames. The Godoy Cruz ace has excelled at full-back recently but admits he feels more comfortable playing centrally in the defense.
Rangers turned to Galdames after missing out on the £3 million Jose Cordoba to Norwich City, while also extending a well-deserved contract to veteran Leon Balogun.
“Keeping Balogun at the club was a no-brainer for me,” Ferguson says. “Yes, he may be 35 years old, but he looks like the consummate professional. I’m delighted he will be staying to provide some continuity as Clement makes other changes.”
With five players already released, the manager will have a clear vision of how he wants his squad to look when he returns to Auchenhowie.
