Brighton is getting closer to selecting 31-year-old American Fabian Hurzeler as their new manager, making him the YOUNGEST manager in Premier League history.
The 31-year-old Fabian Hurzeler of Brighton & Hove Albion is one step closer to being their new head coach after being granted a work visa with governing body endorsement (GBE).
Talks are progressing after a formal contact was made to his Bundesliga team, St Pauli. If everything goes according to plan, Hurzeler will become the youngest permanent head coach in Premier League history.
Since Roberto de Zerbi left at the end of the season, Brighton has been looking for the perfect replacement. They have spoken with a number of potential candidates, including Steve Cooper, Henrik Rydstrom of Malmö, and their former manager Graham Potter. Kieran McKenna, another target, chose to re-sign with Ipswich.
The 31-year-old St. Pauli manager is now the front-runner to replace Roberto De Zerbi at the Amex.
Hurzeler, a native of Texas, has been coaching St. Pauli for the past eighteen months, having been appointed as the team’s youngest-ever coach at the age of 29. Recently, the team has won promotion and made their 13-year break from the Bundesliga. Before retiring from professional football at the age of 23, he played in lower leagues with Bayer Munich’s reserve squad, where he was a colleague of Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can. He also played for Hoffenheim and 1860 Munich. At 30, he started teaching and received his UEFA Pro License. Hurzeler is a huge admirer of Brighton’s tactics and visited the team last year to examine de Zerbi’s ideas.
The agreement that allowed him to hold negotiations in the event that a top club made an offer was in place, but his St Pauli contract does not contain a release clause.
