Newcastle United have initiated a £16 million offer for Burnley’s goalkeeper James Trafford. The England Under-21 international, who joined Burnley from Manchester City last summer, struggled to keep Vincent Kompany’s team from being relegated. Trafford’s performance declined in the second half of a challenging season, leading to his replacement by Arijanet Muric towards the end. Recently, Gareth Southgate left Trafford out of his final 26-man squad for the upcoming European Championships, marking another setback for the 21-year-old.
Despite these difficulties, Trafford is still considered one of the most promising goalkeeping prospects in English football. Newcastle is looking to bolster their goalkeeping options this summer after having to cope without Nick Pope for much of the previous season. Pope, a former Burnley goalkeeper, has suffered significant shoulder injuries twice in recent years, prompting manager Eddie Howe to seek strong competition for him.

The Magpies had shown interest in Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale but were deterred by Arsenal’s high asking price. Arsenal had hoped to recover much of the £25 million they spent on Ramsdale three years ago. If Arsenal doesn’t receive a satisfactory offer, they might consider a season-long loan for Ramsdale, who is now second to David Raya in Mikel Arteta’s lineup. Arteta is also open to selling several squad players who are out of favor, including Emile Smith Rowe, Eddie Nketiah, and Reiss Nelson. Nketiah has drawn interest from four Premier League clubs, while Aston Villa has previously shown strong interest in Smith Rowe. Additionally, Thomas Partey is expected to leave this summer, following Mohamed Elneny’s departure earlier this week.
