According to sources who spoke with Football Insider, Everton and star midfielder James Garner have begun discussions about a new deal. The Merseysiders want to lock down the 23-year-old with a new contract before his current one expires in 2026.

Garner is highly valued by Everton officials and manager Sean Dyche, who especially appreciates his versatility in the middle for the Toffees.

In a reportedly £15 million agreement, he left Man United to join the Goodison Park team two years ago. Throughout the 2023–24 season, Garner made 44 appearances in all competitions, starting 41 of those games. The Merseysiders declared on Saturday, June 1, that the agreement between 777 Partners and Farhad Moshiri for the takeover has ended, and the team is now prepared to look into other possibilities for a new ownership.

In the 2023–24 Premier League season, Dyche’s team placed 15th overall, despite losing eight points due to financial infractions. Along with players like Idrissa Gueye and Abdoulaye Doucoure, Garner formed a potent midfield that helped the Toffees win 13 of their 38 games in the top tier.
