Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth told GIVEMESPORT that Southampton’s attempt to permanently sign Flynn Downes is ‘one to watch.’
Last season, Downes had a significant impact on loan at St. Mary’s, solidifying Russel Martin’s midfield as they secured promotion to the Premier League. The English midfielder made 37 appearances for the South Coast club, scoring twice, and now Martin is eager to bring him back.
However, reports indicate that West Ham may be considering retaining Downes and reintegrating him into Julen Lopetegui’s squad. Sheth discussed the ongoing, intricate transfer saga with GIVEMESPORT.

After a standout season with Swansea City in 2021/22, Downes secured a £12 million transfer to his boyhood club, West Ham. Despite his potential, the 25-year-old couldn’t displace Declan Rice or Tomas Soucek and was loaned to Southampton last summer as James Ward-Prowse moved in the opposite direction.
Downes thrived under Russel Martin’s possession-based system, showcasing his passing and ball retention skills. While Southampton is eager to retain him, Lopetegui might offer him another chance to prove himself at the London Stadium.
Dharmesh Sheth explained to GIVEMESPORT:
“Two scenarios are possible. He could reintegrate into the West Ham team if they decide they want him to play. Alternatively, if Southampton shows strong interest, West Ham might increase his price tag based on his recent performance to see how badly Southampton wants him.
West Ham is in a favorable position, and so is Downes. Southampton will likely explore their options because Downes was crucial to their promotion last season, making this situation one to watch.”
With Lopetegui having players like Ward-Prowse, Soucek, and Edson Alvarez, Downes might be considered surplus to requirements, potentially leading to a sale. Additionally, with Lucas Paqueta facing a possible ban and having been a target for Manchester City, West Ham might need to raise funds, possibly sacrificing Downes in the process.
