Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has cautioned any new Leicester City manager about the initial challenge they will likely encounter at King Power Stadium.
Currently, Leicester City is experiencing a prolonged wait regarding the departure of their promotion-winning manager, Enzo Maresca, to Chelsea, but they likely have potential replacements in mind for the Italian.
One significant issue on Maresca’s agenda, had he remained, would have been a potential points deduction for Leicester City’s alleged violation of player spending rules during their last Premier League stint.
Maguire indicates that the case will probably be expedited once Leicester re-enters the Premier League, potentially leading to a substantial 15-point penalty.
Speaking to the Football Insider website, Maguire, an academic, author, and broadcaster, mentioned that the Premier League would aim to resolve Leicester’s case swiftly to ensure clarity before the 2024/25 season begins.
The club was charged in April with breaching the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules after recording losses of £89.7m in their 2022/23 accounts.
According to The Telegraph, their expected punishment could range from six to a record-breaking 15 points, which would make avoiding relegation very challenging.
Maguire explained that Leicester previously utilized the rules to avoid sanctions by arguing they were not an EFL or Premier League club for three years leading up to June 30, 2023. However, this merely postponed the issue rather than resolving it, and now it is up to the Premier League to address it promptly.
The formal process of transferring shares in the Premier League from Sheffield United, Luton, and Burnley to Leicester, Southampton, and Ipswich will proceed. Once completed, a swift response from the Premier League is expected to address the situation over the summer.
