“Incredible Comparison: Southampton Boss Drops Newcastle Star in Ryan Fraser Transfer Talk, Highlighting Fraser’s Potential in a ‘Dream’ Saints Move”
Southampton manager Russell Martin praised Ryan Fraser’s performance as “incredible” in their play-off final victory over Leeds United, where Fraser played 70 minutes.
Fraser, who joined Southampton on loan at the start of the season, scored six goals in the Championship, helping the team secure promotion back to the Premier League.
The win at Wembley, secured by a goal from former Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong, boosts Southampton’s chances of signing Fraser permanently this summer. Martin, who has expressed interest in keeping Fraser, discussed the winger’s role in the win with Neil Warnock. Martin had Fraser play in an unfamiliar wingback position, and Warnock complimented his performance.
Martin recalled their time together in the Scotland squad, noting Fraser’s strength and aggression.
Martin replied: “In the Scotland squad, Matt Ritchie, Ryan, and I often ended up wrestling or fighting. I know he’s strong and aggressive. People questioned why we signed Fraser, but I knew him well as a teammate. Despite tough seasons, he’s been incredible for us, not just in matches but also in training every day.”
Fraser, who was sidelined at Newcastle towards the end of the 2022/23 season, has expressed his desire to stay at Southampton permanently: “I think my time at Newcastle is done now,” he admitted in January. “Being put out on loan usually means you’re not going back. The second half of last season was tough. Coming here was about helping the team in any way I could, whether off the bench or making an impact in games. It’s a great feeling to contribute.”
