This summer, Lewis Hall’s £28 million loan from Chelsea to Newcastle United is expected to become permanent. The 19-year-old’s 2023–24 season-long loan to Newcastle resulted in the activation of a performance-related obligation to buy clause. The amount that United will pay will shatter the club record for a young transfer, which was set in 2002 when Sporting CP paid £8.5 million for Hugo Viana.
Hall had a challenging start to his loan stint, but he rebounded well for Newcastle in the latter part of the season, turning into a consistent starter. Hall had previously scored at Old Trafford in a 3-0 Carabao Cup victory in November, but this was his first Premier League goal in a 3-2 loss to Manchester United.
Hall posted on social media to reflect on his loan stint, writing, “A season of invaluable lessons and experiences which I’ll forever be grateful for.” I appreciate Geordies’ unwavering support.
In just one of his team’s first 29 Premier League games in 2023–24, Hall received the starting nod from Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe. But going into the summer, Hall had solidified his position as a key left-back player after putting in a lot of work on the training field. Prior to Hall’s formal arrival, the Magpies manager saw Hall as a long-term player at St. James’ Park.
Howe said, “I think there will be a settling in period and adjustment, not just in terms of the training but in terms of his life, how he feels, how comfortable he feels. That’s natural for any player when they come to a new club, especially for someone so young.” One must constantly go through a process; one does not just arrive here. People seem to forget that even Bruno Guimaraes had to acclimate before he could play; he didn’t just come here and start.
“I believe he did a great job of dedicating himself to his profession and maintaining consistency in it, despite his certainly frustration at things not moving forward with him more quickly than he had hoped. “But I believe that’s true for any player; he performed admirably at Old Trafford and displayed a great deal of maturity for a player his age, and I’m happy with his current level of play.”
