Since some well-known players are still available in free agency, it’s not too late for the Dallas Cowboys to add a significant player to their squad. Dallas could improve in a few areas on both sides of the ball, and adding Calais Campbell would strengthen the defensive line considerably. At 38 years old, Campbell is among the league’s most experienced players. However, Tony Catalina, the author of Blogging the Boys, thinks he’s the ideal kind of temporary addition.
“The Cowboys front office considers age in the vast majority of cases, but for a one-year rental in a desperate circumstance, Campbell might be the ideal addition for the team. “Campbell being inserted into the interior of this defensive line with the pass rushers they have on the outside could be a game-changer for this defense on a pure production level, with no additional outside factors,” Catalina wrote on May 23.
As he approaches the end of his career, Campbell has moved around the NFL in recent years. Nevertheless, the defensive lineman’s effectiveness is still evident despite his advanced age. During his nine years on the squad, Campbell recorded 107 tackles for loss, made two trips to the Pro Bowl, and more.
Campbell’s finest NFL year, though, was spent with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Pro Football Reference notes that he earned 14.5 sacks and forced 3 fumbles in 2017 after joining with the Jags over the offseason. For the first and only time in his career, he was named to the first team of the All-Pro.
The next year, Campbell added 10.5 sacks to his total. However, it was evidently during his age-33 season in 2019 that his output started to decline. After signing with the Baltimore Ravens in 2020, Campbell played three seasons and recorded 11 sacks.
However, it was a good thing that he joined the Atlanta Falcons prior to the 2023 season. Campbell recorded 11 tackles for loss in addition to 6.5 sacks, which is his most since 2019. It’s obvious that he has changed as a producer since the late 2010s. However, he hasn’t deteriorated nearly as much as several veteran pass rushers.

Nevertheless, Spotrac also calculates that Campbell has an annual market value of almost $7.5 million. Therefore, a better deal might be achievable, but it might not be simple to execute. It might have been better to hold out until closer to the season if Dallas was interested. Campbell still lacks a team, despite his obvious desire to play. Holding out until the end of the summer may compel a free agent to sign.
