“OPINION: Newcastle’s Dual Strategy Could Yield Major FFP Savings and Secure a Top Talent”
There is no such thing as a free transfer, not technically. Newcastle United’s ongoing payment of Jeff Hendrick’s substantial salary, despite his last appearance for the club being in December 2021, illustrates this point.
Although Hendrick’s contract expires this summer, another free agent, Ryan Fraser—who also joined during the Ashley era—is still on the club’s payroll. Fraser’s wages have complicated the possibility of a permanent transfer following his fallout with Eddie Howe.
However, when executed correctly, these moves can save clubs millions in the long run, despite the hefty agent fees involved. For example, players like Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly would command eight-figure transfer fees if they were under contract, but now no such fee is necessary. This is particularly important for Newcastle, who must be astute in strengthening several positions while complying with financial regulations this summer.
Newcastle likely would have been in the market for a quality center-back anyway, but their plans were ‘impacted’ when Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles both sustained serious knee injuries in March. There is a possibility that these players might not return to the pitch for another four to seven months, and even then, it will take time for them to regain peak performance.
This context explains why discussions with the representatives of Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly are progressing. Newcastle’s coaching staff have identified defensive weaknesses as a key area for improvement, especially since only West Ham, and the relegated Luton Town and Sheffield United, conceded more away goals last season. Strengthening the defense is crucial, particularly if Newcastle qualify for Europe, given their injury-ridden squad struggled with competing on multiple fronts last season. Reinforcing the squad will increase competition for places and provide a deeper pool of capable players when injuries inevitably occur.
Adarabioyo and Kelly seem like sensible targets. Both are athletic, intelligent defenders who are comfortable with the ball and familiar with the league.
