Exclusive: Gheorghe Hagi discusses Ianis’s future at Rangers following his loan move.
Ianis Hagi will likely stay with Rangers in the future, according to Gheorghe Hagi, after spending a season on loan at Deportivo Alaves.
The Romanian midfielder, who has played 25 games for the La Liga team this season, has spent the 2023–24 season away from Ibrox. He is expected to return to Rangers when Alaves plays Las Palmas in their season-ending match.
Having made 99 appearances for the Gers overall, it is unknown what Hagi’s future holds in Scotland. He has received advice from his illustrious father to play football at Ibrox.
“After his season ends, Ianis will be preparing for the Euros and then we will see what he does next in the summer,” he said in an interview with Rangers Review on Thursday, May 23.
He was the greatest young player on the Rangers when they won the league. He was only lent to Alaves; he is not leaving. He has a lot of opportunities.
“I think he had a successful season in Spain; in their most recent matchup with Real Madrid, for instance, he was his team’s best player.
“Everyone seems to forget that he has recovered from an extremely terrible knee injury, which is something that people need to keep in mind. I would be the first to sign him if I were in charge of a major European team.

There are still two years left on the 25-year-old’s Ibrox deal. In light of this, the midfield player must be sold by the Gers if they want him to stay in Scotland.
During his tenure with Rangers, Hagi has made a lot of memorable moments. Most notably, in 2020, he scored two goals against Braga to help the Gers win 3-2 in the Europa League.
But since being sent to Spain by Michael Beale last summer, he has turned into an undesirable soul in recent seasons. Moreover, a future in Scotland appears improbable, even though Philippe Clement has not yet collaborated with him.
It is difficult to dispute that Hagi had a successful loan period with Alaves despite his father’s recent remarks, considering he only started seven league games and scored two goals overall.
Furthermore, there aren’t many spots remaining for him because Tom Lawrence and Todd Cantwell can both play in the offensive midfield position.
Hagi will find it difficult to have an effect, even as a winger, with Ross McCausland, Scott Wright, and Rabbi Matondo all at the club, and Oscar Cortes perhaps returning before the next campaign.
The player would give Clement some much-needed protection, and for free, but before a decision can be taken, the manager must be aware of his talents.
