“Sheffield United Set for Squad Transformation: Manager Chris Wilder Seeks New Leaders Amid Summer Departures”
Sheffield United will provide further details on Tuesday regarding the players who will be departing Bramall Lane this summer. Replacing them with strong personalities will be a key focus for Chris Wilder.
During the final match of an extremely poor Premier League season, many leaders were present at Bramall Lane, but most were in the stands rather than on the field.
Chris Basham, Oliver Norwood, and George Baldock bid their farewells after being instrumental in Wilder’s initial tenure, which saw the Blades rise from League One to a high of ninth place in the 2019-20 Premier League season. Their exits, along with Wes Foderingham and Max Lowe, were pre-announced, but the full roster of players whose contracts won’t be renewed will be disclosed on Tuesday. Other contracted players will be sold, with Ivo Grbic’s future in doubt after not making the bench for the 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. Captain John Egan also missed the match due to a season-ending injury in September.
The lack of leadership was noticeable against Spurs and throughout the season, an issue Wilder recognizes needs addressing. Once again, the Blades conceded two quick goals, which Wilder saw as indicative of the problem.
He said, “The atmosphere in the stadium was excellent, and we started strongly, but any setback – like the second goal, which was a fantastic finish, followed quickly by the third (scored by Dejan Kulusevski six minutes after Pedro Porro doubled the lead) – showed our vulnerability. One team tried to keep the score at three while the other wasn’t concerned because they knew they had secured the win.
“Yes, it’s Spurs with players like Son Heung-Min, Kulusevski, James Maddison, Pape Sarr, Porro, Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero, but my upbringing instills a different mindset.
“We may be the underdog, but I never believe we’re destined to lose.
“Once again, we had to make physical substitutions, with certain players limited in minutes. Technically, we’re not capitalizing on key moments, and mentally, we’re lacking resilience. When we face adversity, we don’t have enough to overcome it.
“I wish Chris Basham, George Baldock, and John Egan were available. I don’t think I’d be saying the same things if those players were in the team.
“My challenge is to build a technically strong and coachable team, but most importantly, we need strong characters and leaders. If a mistake happens, we need someone like Baldock to make that tackle or John Egan to make that block.”
Regarding the selection of goalkeepers Wes Foderingham and substitute Adam Davies, both out of contract in the summer, over £2m January signing Ivo Grbic, Wilder said, “That was my decision regarding Adam Davies. I felt he deserved to be part of it, and I believed Wes deserved to play.”
