“Rangers Goalkeeper Jack Butland Reveals Title Loss ‘Hit Like a Ton of Bricks,’ Vows to Rebuild for Future Success”
Reflecting on his first season in Scottish football following Rangers’ 3-3 draw with Hearts at Tynecastle, Jack Butland admitted that failing to secure the title had been a heavy blow for him and his teammates. With only three wins in their last eight Premiership games, it’s no surprise that the Ibrox players are feeling stunned.
However, Butland remains confident they can recover, disrupt Celtic’s hopes in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden this weekend, and set the stage for a successful 2024/25 season. The former England goalkeeper has shone over the past ten months due to his high-level experience and exceptional skills. He has also thrived by embracing the pressure to deliver success.
The 31-year-old, capped nine times, is still hopeful of making Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024 and knows there’s no time for self-pity.
He has immediately focused on finishing the season on a high note by winning another trophy. He believes that capturing the Scottish Cup will help restore their wounded pride and ensure they return next season with the confidence to be champions.
Asked about the current emotions in the Rangers dressing room, Butland said: “It’s a mix of everything. There’s frustration because we came so close.
“Even though the table might not show it now (Celtic finished eight points ahead after 38 games), we had our chances and opportunities. That’s where the frustration comes in.
“But ultimately, there’s defiance. And there’s definitely some belief going into next week. There’s pride on the line. That’s what this club and playing in this city is all about, it’s always about the next challenge.
“The league is now out of our hands and gone. We have to focus on the cup next weekend. It’s always about the next one.”
He continued: “Winning trophies has to be everyone’s goal. It has to be the club’s demand, the manager’s, the players’,
Butland was the target of an unsuccessful bid from struggling Premier League team Nottingham Forest during the January transfer window and is likely to attract interest from clubs in England and across Europe this summer.
Philippe Clement acknowledged last week that selling valuable players could allow him to strengthen the squad with new signings, but he stressed that Butland would not be sold “for any price.” However, a seven-figure offer would certainly test Rangers’ resolve.
The former Birmingham City, Stoke City, and Crystal Palace player expressed his happiness in Glasgow and his enjoyment of playing for Rangers this season despite not winning the Premiership.
