“Alan Shearer Slams Newcastle United’s Post-Season Australia Trip as ‘Madness’ Following ‘Not Ideal’ Claim”
Alan Shearer has criticized Newcastle United’s decision to fly to Australia shortly after finishing their 2023-24 season, calling it “madness.”
Following their victory over Brentford on the last day of the Premier League season, which secured them a top-seven finish, Eddie Howe’s team immediately departed for Melbourne to take part in ‘Global Football Week’. They are set to play against Tottenham Hotspur at the MCG on Wednesday and then the A-League All Stars. The trip has drawn criticism, including from their own player Kieran Trippier, who noted last week that it is not ideal due to it being a tournament year. He mentioned understanding the club’s rationale, having experienced similar situations at Tottenham and Atletico Madrid, but emphasized that it isn’t ideal with the Euros and Copa America approaching.
“We’re players, so we need to do what’s best for the club to move forward. Once we’re there, we’ll embrace the experience and make the most of it, hoping everything goes smoothly. It’s not just England; many nations and clubs are involved. We just have to deal with it, even though it’s not ideal for me as a player. It’s a long 25-hour trip, not a short distance like Benidorm. There are no excuses; I understand the club’s reasons, and we have to manage it.
Newcastle legend Shearer understands the challenges faced by Trippier and his teammates, especially those like Bruno Guimaraes and Miguel Almiron, who will compete in Euro 2024 or the Copa America next month. Shearer called the situation ‘madness’ on Match of the Day, saying, ‘Crazy. Can you imagine being a player competing in the Copa America or Euros and then having to deal with this? I wouldn’t be happy at all. Crazy.’
