This hypothetical deal would have surpassed the current British record of £115 million, which Chelsea paid Brighton last summer for midfielder Moises Caicedo, as well as the £105 million Arsenal paid for Declan Rice from West Ham United.
While Newcastle’s decision to sell Cole at the time was criticized, the proceeds from the transfer allowed the Magpies to reinvest in Shearer. The Newcastle-born striker went on to enjoy a successful tenure at his childhood club, becoming the Premier League’s all-time leading scorer and an English football icon.
