The Cowboys are getting ready for a competition at the third wide receiver spot.
With WR Michael Gallup’s departure to Las Vegas, the Cowboys are now in search of their next WR3. The upcoming preseason promises an intense competition for this role, with Coach Mike McCarthy eyeing younger talents to step up. Although Jalen Tolbert seems like the frontrunner, other contenders like KaVontae Turpin and Jalen Brooks are ready to challenge him.
Tolbert showcased his potential last season, making the most of his opportunities with 22 catches and two touchdowns.However, Turpin’s offensive versatility and Brooks’ flawless performance when called upon in 2023 add layers to the competition. Turpin’s role on special teams might increase, but McCarthy shouldn’t overlook his prowess as a receiver.
Brooks, entering his second season, has already demonstrated his reliability, going six for six in catches. As training camp approaches, expect these three players to intensify the battle for the coveted WR3 spot.
The Cowboys have introduced a fresh contender into the mix this year with WR Ryan Flournoy, a sixth-round pick from SE Missouri State. Flournoy, often likened to Dez Bryant for his size and athleticism, aims to stake his claim as the next “contested catch WR” following in the footsteps of Michael Gallup. His journey into this fray commenced over the weekend at the team’s rookie minicamp.
While the contenders for the WR3 spot are not yet finalized, the Cowboys’ front office remains open to adding more challengers. Despite releasing WR Martavis Bryant from the practice squad, they entertained a visit from WR free agent Zay Jones. Although Jones has since signed with the Arizona Cardinals, the Cowboys may continue exploring available WR free agents to enhance the competition. Notable names still on the market include Michael Thomas, Hunter Renfrow, Mecole Hardman, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Corey Davis.
Additionally, several current roster players could emerge as sleeper candidates during training camp, including Tyron Billy-Johnson, Jalen Cropper, David Durden, Racey McMath, and undrafted free agents Cam Johnson and Corey Crooms, all vying for a roster spot. With the WR3 position seemingly belonging to Tolbert, the Cowboys are poised to make the competition intense, with training camp and preseason serving as the battleground for the coveted WR3 crown.
