Owner of Nottingham Forest Evangelos Marinakis goes on a new offensive against referees
Owner of Nottingham Forest Evangelos Marinakis has criticised Premier League referees, alleging that several errors have “cost” his team significant points this year.
Forest is still in the thick of the relegation struggle despite a number of contentious decisions going against them. As they prepare for their final two games against Chelsea and Burnley, they are currently only three points above the relegation zone.
Last month, after Forest thought they were denied three penalties in a match they eventually lost 2-0 to Everton, their resentment of the referees reached a boiling point. They sent an angry statement on social media following the game that said, “Three incredibly poor decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept.”
And Marinakis has since reiterated those remarks. “It is stressful because of what has been happening since the beginning of the year with some decisions and points deduction,” he stated to BBC Sport. “What has transpired thus far is unfair.
“Referee decisions have cost us points and this is something that has been repeated and repeated and what we expect for the Premier League and referees is to correct these mistakes.”
In response to a question about whether he thought there was a grudge against Forest or if there had just been an accumulation of mistakes, Marinakis said, “It’s a combination.” I’m hoping that it’s an error, but what worries me is that it keeps happening.”If it’s a personal grudge, it shouldn’t have been a personal grudge because fairness is required, regardless of your feelings towards the other person. It’s unfortunate because I never give up and we have a strong appetite for the club.
“It was quite upsetting to witness three consecutive errors made by Ashley Young of Everton. Furthermore, we had told the Premier League chairman that every referee has a favourite side. Unfortunately nothing happened and they didn’t make any change and then we saw what we saw.”
