Boston Celtics wear patch to honor Marathon responders

At Saturday’s Game 1 of the NBA playoffs, the Boston Celtics are wearing a patch honoring Boston’s courage and perseverance during and after the Boston Marathon bombing tragedy.

And, before the game, Boston’s Paul Pierce and New York’s Carmelo Anthony addressed the Madison Square Garden crowd.

“On behalf of the New York Knicks organization, we just want to let Boston know that we send our prayers to them throughout this unfortunate tragedy,” Anthony said. “We as New Yorkers understand what you’re going through, so once again we want to send out our prayers and condolences to the city of Boston, the people of Boston as well.”

Pierce followed with: “On behalf of the Boston Celtics, the city of Boston, we’d like to thank you for your support and the support from all the people throughout the country during this tragic event. And Boston will rise and run again. Thank you.”

When Pierce was introduced after Anthony spoke, some Knicks fans booed Pierce. But their inappropriate boos were quickly hushed by fans shushing.

“I don’t think that was the right thing to do,” Anthony said. “At the end of the day, we all know what happened in Boston. … the situation like today, it’s all about the U.S. It’s sad that we have to go through an unfortunate tragedy. Whoever booed him, shouldn’t have booed him, not in a situation like that.”

Before the national anthem, flags were presented by color guards from Boston and New York.

The patch was unveiled Saturday and will remain on Boston’s jerseys throughout the postseason, is blue with a gold heart in the middle surrounded by a gold wreath and the words “Boston Stands As One.”

The organization also announced on Saturday several initiatives to support victims of the bombing. The Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation has pledged to raise $200,000 for The One Fund Boston. The Shamrock Foundation will donate $100,000 and plans to raise another $100,000.

“Our Celtics family and our fans join all Bostonians in demonstrating our city’s great strength by coming together to stand as one to get through this difficult time,” Boston Celtics managing partner and Shamrock Foundation President Stephen Pagliuca said in a statement. “We are proud of all the heroic efforts that were made during this horrible tragedy and would like to show our support to those victimized by this terrible act.”

The Celtics teamed up with Adidas and created limited edition T-shirts with the words “Boston Stands As One.” Celtics players wore the shirt during pregame warmups Saturday. All proceeds from sales of the 2,620 shirts will be donated to The One Fund Boston. The shirts can be purchased at Celtics.com/shop.

The franchise is also giving ticketholders to the canceled April 16 Indiana Pacers game the opportunity to donate their refund to The One Fund, and all 50/50 in-game raffle proceeds during the playoffs will also be given to The One Fund.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Friday was an unusual day for the team, which left Boston on Thursday. One suspect died early Friday and the other suspect, captured alive, remained at large until Friday night.

“Yesterday was a strange day,” Rivers said. “You’re going to practice with your guys on the phone and literally everyone calling home and yelling, “Stay in the house.’ I told our staff we were going to make a lot of mistakes in practice. There’s no way their focus is where it should be and you felt that. Honestly, we were right. Practice beared out that way.

“Thank God it’s over. It was good to see in the city happy, hugging and rejoicing, and I’m sure our players had a chance to exhale because their families were still back there. … What that does to us today, I have no idea. Emotionally, it could go either way. Hopefully, we can figure out a way if it’s not going the right way to gather them right to get it back. Thank God it’s four-quarter game. I’m always worried about any team — even if it wasn’t for this — being too emotionally high at the beginning of the game.”

Injured Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo was scheduled to join the team in New York Friday, but could leave the Boston area because of the lockdown while authorities searched for one of the suspects.
