NEW DELHI: Andy Russell, the legendary outside linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers and a two-time Super Bowl champion, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 82. The news of his death was first reported by Action News 4 in Pittsburgh, and later confirmed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The cause of Russell’s death is not immediately known.
Russell, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, was a vital part of the renowned Steel Curtain defense that dominated the NFL during the 1970s. He played alongside fellow linebackers Jack Lambert and Jack Ham, forming a star-studded trio that contributed significantly to the Steelers’ success.
“If you want to be a great linebacker, you also have to be smart out there, and he taught me the mental part of the game,” said Jack Ham in a statement to the Post-Gazette. “I think that’s what set him apart and made his career such a great career here in Pittsburgh.”
Selected in the 16th round of the 1963 NFL Draft, Russell went on to play 12 seasons with the Steelers. He started his career in 1963, took a brief hiatus for a two-year military stint, and then returned to the field from 1966 to 1976. Remarkably, Russell played 168 consecutive games, never missing a single matchup during his entire career.
In the 1975 postseason, he made history by setting a playoff record for the longest fumble return when he ran 93 yards for a touchdown against the then-Baltimore Colts. This record stood until January 15, 2023, when Sam Hubbard of the Cincinnati Bengals had a 98-yard return against the Baltimore Ravens.
Before entering the NFL, Russell showcased his skills as a linebacker and running back for the University of Missouri. His outstanding contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into Missouri’s athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.
