SAD END: Fans Mourn the Passing of Former Chicago Bears and Texas A&M Star Darren Lewis.
Chicago Bears: Following the news of the former running back’s cancerous death, fans have offered prayers.
Fans of Texas A&M and the Chicago Bears offered prayers to the family of Darren Lewis after learning of the 55-year-old former running back’s cancerous death. Texas A&M made the death public on their website on Friday. A star in college, the former running back for the Chicago Bears
Lewis now owns the all-time rushing record at Texas A&M, as was previously covered on GH. Before the Bears selected him in the 1991 draft, he broke a number of records:
He established the Aggies single-season rushing record in 1988 with 1,692 yards, making his records noteworthy. Up until 2018, when Trayveon Williams scored more than 1,700 yards, the record was unbroken. But in 1988, Lewis lost to Barry Sanders for the Heisman Trophy and merely lagged behind him in the rush.
Lewis defeated the Heisman Trophy winner at the time to win the 1990 Holiday Bowl in his final college game. He gained two touchdowns and ran for 104 yards in that game. He also completed a trick play that resulted in a touchdown pass to his own quarterback.
Lewis was selected by the Chicago Bears in the 1991 NFL Draft, capping an incredible career. Lewis’s career came to an end after just three seasons of league and team play. Following the conclusion of his career, Lewis struggled with addiction and found himself in legal issues as a result.
