Cowboys Make Trade Decision on Michael Gallup
With a steady decline in production and a lofty salary cap price tag, the Dallas Cowboys have effectively ended Michael Gallup’s time in Arlington by giving the receiver permission to seek a trade.
According to multiple reports late Saturday night, the Cowboys – not surprisingly – have given Michael Gallup permission to seek a trade, effectively ending his time in Dallas. With Gallup expected to be released from the roster as soon as next week, the likelihood of trade in exchange of any sort or real value seems a longshot.
The third-round draft pick from 2018 has experienced a drastic decline in production since suffering a torn ACL in the final game of the 2021 regular season. Last season he had career-lows in yards (418) and touchdowns (two) and the second-fewest catches (34).
Given his cap hit for 2024 ($13.8 million per Spotrac), it makes sense that Gallup’s time is up. Late last season his snaps essentially went to second-year receiver Jalen Tolbert as Gallup failed to regain the burst and athleticism that made him one of quarterback Dak Prescott’s favorites targets.
His best season was 2019, when he made 66 catches for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns in 12 starts. But last season he disappeared behind CeeDee Lamb’s record year and the rise of Brandin Cooks and tight end Jake Ferguson.
Owner Jerry Jones ominously sidestepped questions about Gallup at last week’s NFL Scouting Combine.
“We don’t have a decision that we would like to talk about right now,” Jones said. “It’s one that we will be going over with him. Nothing we would say without him being involved. We need to sit down and go over stuff with him before we talk about what we’re going to do with him.”
