Giants Coaching Staff Facing “Defining Season” According to CBS Sports
Next season will be a make-or-break season for the New York Giants coaching staff, according to a new CBS Sports ranking.

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen have a lot of work to do this off-season to get a team that finished 6-11 back on track.

Already work has begun in that regard in that Daboll has vastly revised his coaching staff, replacing four assistants (special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey, offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins, and defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins) replacing four who resigned and moved on (defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, running backs coach Jeff Nixon, strength and conditioning coordinator Craig Fitzpatrick, and tight ends coach Andy Bischoff), promoting three to new duties (offensive coordinator Mike Kafka to assistant head coach; defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson to passing game coordinator duties; and quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney to offensive passing game coordinator duties); adding one (Frank Piraino, director of strength and conditioning); and reassigning Mike Adams from assistant special teams to assistant defensive backs coach.

Between the changes made to the staff and the challenges the team’s brass must resolve in terms of improving its personnel, CBS Sports NFL Analyst Jordan Dajani, in his ranking of all 32 NFL coaching staffs, put the Giants’ staff in the “2024 Will be a Defining Season” category, noting:

The Giants had to deal with plenty of injuries, but 2023 was pretty disastrous for former Coach of the Year Brian Daboll. Other than all the losses on the field, there was also reportedly tension between Daboll and his staff, which is a reason why Wink Martindale is now in the college ranks. Kafka received head-coaching interviews this offseason but is back on staff. Defensively, the Giants brought on former Titans defensive coordinator Shane Bowen after missing out on Dennard Wilson, who actually took Bowen’s spot in Tennessee.

Depending on what the Giants do personnel-wise this season, Daboll is probably safe for at least another year after, especially if the team drafts a young quarterback and transitions to that player as its hope for the franchise’s future.

But unless the Giants, who are as of right now not in any discussions to be among next year’s postseason participants, show no progress in 2024 coming off the 6-11 season last year, Daboll and his staff’s footing could end up on even shakier ground than initially anticipated.
