Whether Trent Alexander-Arnold could really be punished for his Manchester City celebration

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold certainly enjoyed his goal against Manchester City on Saturday.

Having been given a slightly difficult day by City winger Jeremy Doku, Alexander-Arnold popped up at the other end with a wonderful late equaliser for the Reds.

The 25-year-old headed straight for the home fans, standing statue still in-front of them holding a single finger to his lips. Clearly, the City faithful weren’t too happy with this, and let Trent know exactly what they thought.

In some quarters, the celebration could have been seen as inflaming an already hostile crowd. And there had even been rumours that Alexander-Arnold could face an FA sanction. But according to journalist James Pearce on X yesterday, there’s no chance of Liverpool’s right-back being punished.

“Reports suggesting Trent Alexander-Arnold could face FA disciplinary action for shushing the Man City fans after scoring on Saturday are wrong,” Pearce explains.

“The FA aren’t even looking into it.”

Had Alexander-Arnold faced any kind of sanction from English football’s governing body, it would have set a truly dangerous precedent.

There are times when players’ celebrations can go overboard and perhaps deserve some retribution. But this was not one of those times.

If you’re of a City persuasion, of course it would have been incredibly irritating. Imagine Bernardo Silva, for example, scoring at the Kop end and doing the same thing. We’d all be fuming.

But frustration aside, there’s really no reason for Trent to face any kind of repercussions.

Instead, sadly, the England international is likely to have already felt a torrent of online abuse following the game.

Having set himself up as an easy target, it’s not hard to see how he could now feel the brunt of City supporter’s angst.

The Eithad will also likely let Trent know about that the next time he sets foot in the Champions’ stadium.

But for now, it’s nothing doing. Liverpool fans can sit back and watch their No.66 silence the whole ground safe in the knowledge that there’s no punishment coming down the line.

His teammates both former and current seemed to enjoy it, and we did too.
