Concerning Spurs financial update with only Man Utd worse off in fees owed
Manchester United are the only club who owe more than Tottenham Hotspur when it comes to transfe feed
Tottenham Hotspur still owe around £250million in outstanding transfer fees – more than any Premier League club bar Manchester United.
Despite seeming like a relatively low-key window for Spurs, the club still forked out over £200million on new arrivals in the summer. That is because Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski – two players previously on loan – had their deals made permanent for around £70million.
Brennan Johnson also arrived on deadline day to bolster Tottenham’s attack just days after losing star striker Harry Kane. Last year, former boss Antonio Conte was also allowed to spend big on the likes of Richarlison, Cristian Romero and Yves Bissouma.
A lack of European football to boost Spurs’ coffers is also concerning but football financial expert Kieran Maguire insisted a few shrewd Daniel Levy moves may offer some respite. Tottenham Davinson Sanchez (permanent) and Tanguy Ndombele (loan) were allowed to join Galatasaray earlier this week.
“Buying players on credit is a growing phenomenon in the Premier League,” Maguire told Football Insider. “I would estimate that, overall, Premier League clubs will owe more than £2billion when we finally start to see the accounts next year.
“The 2022 figures indicated the figure of owed payments was around about £1.86 billion. “Since then, clubs have clearly had a very active window in the summer of 2023.
“From a cash flow point of view, it does mean that Spurs might have to do a bit of juggling. We’ve already seen that take place since the closure of the Premier League window, with players being offloaded to Turkey and other markets where the window is still open.
“So I don’t see it as being prohibitive having this substantial amount of transfer fees outstanding. It’s just part of the business. For all of the faults that the club has made on the pitch, off the pitch they are a very, very slick machine.“
