All documents have been signed and completed between West Ham and Manchester City for the loan transfer of Kalvin Phillips, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian transfer specialist reported via his X account [25 January] that all documents between the clubs had been completed for the Man City midfielder, all but confirming the January loan deal.
The deal is expected to include a buy-option clause amid a lack of playing time at Etihad Stadium since arriving from Leeds United in a £45million transfer in the summer of 2022. [BBC Sport]
It has been rather depressing to watch Phillips’ Man City career unfold since making the move from Elland Road in 2022, especially with the player always showing a smile.
The 28-year-old will be desperate to get on the pitch under David Moyes, who has admired the midfielder for multiple seasons, as per BBC Sport’s Simon Stone.
Phillips has made just 31 appearances under Pep Guardiola in one-and-a-half seasons, with Pep Guardiola openly expressing his guilt at not being able to supply the player with reasonable minutes on the pitch.
However, the England international could become a vital player for Moyes in the second half of the season, even despite his lack of match fitness and sharpness.
Likely to create a midfield partnership with Edson Alvarez, Delan Rice’s replacement, the pair will allow West Ham to become more free-flowing in attack, with the forward players a lot more free of defensive responsibilities.
Phillips has shown in his time with England that he works brilliantly alongside another defensive midfielder. However, it could be a bad sign for Tomas Soucek, who will likely make way for the loan signing.
