Paul Robinson would be surprised if Manchester United completed a January deal for Tottenham’s Ryan Sessegnon after sending Sergio Reguilon back, but admits such deals may occur this month.
The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reported on his 5 January Rading the Game newsletter that the Englishman could head to Old Trafford thanks to the “open channel” left after the previous deal for his Spanish teammate.
Robinson believes that teams are all currently so “scared” of FFP breaches after Everton and Nottingham Forest were charged that loan deals could happen which “surprise a few people”.
But with Sessegnon, 23, having missed virtually the whole season so far after surgery the former England keeper thinks it would still be unlikely United make a move before the deadline, while the Spurs boss has to be careful with exits.
The former Fulham man has made one appearance under Ange Postecoglou, coming on late in the FA Cup win over Burnley on 5 January.
“It would be a difficult one for the manager to sanction any players to leave at the moment,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.
“The need for Tottenham is bringing players in because of the amount of players they’ve got missing.
“With Reguilon coming back in from Manchester United that didn’t work for him clearly, it doesn’t look like he’s got a long-term future at Tottenham under Ange.
“With Sessegnon his lack of first-team football would be his problem. I’d be surprised if United came in for him simply due to his lack of game time in his Premier League.
“But everybody now is so scared of FFP and this profit and sustainability law that Everton and Forest have been hit with and that’s one of the contributors to why we are seeing such a quiet January transfer window.
“Everybody’s scared of the FFP but loans could happen so deals like this may surprise a few people.”
