ESPN’s Michael Wilbon Claims College Football Lied to Florida State
ESPN’s Michael Wilbon is accusing college football of lying to the Florida State Seminoles.
Undefeated Florida State was left out of the College Football Playoff in favor of two one-loss conference champs: Texas and Alabama. The reason? The Seminoles lost star quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending injury.
From a young age, athletes are taught that persevering through setbacks and obstacles always pays off in the long run. But in this case, Florida State was lied to.
On Monday, Wilbon revealed that the four playoff teams are the exact same teams he would’ve hand picked to compete in the postseason. However, that doesn’t change the fact that Florida State was penalized, in a way, for persevering through the obstacle of losing their star quarterback. In other words, it didn’t pay off for the Seminoles.
“On my own ballot, I think I would have voted for those four. I genuinely feel bad for Florida State. One of the lessons that football purports to teach, fraudulently, is that you persevere and play through your wounds, and you overcome. People say that football is the greatest sport ever because it teaches you all these lessons. It didn’t teach you a damn thing. It lied to Florida State. The sport of football lied,” Wilbon said during Monday’s edition of Pardon the Interruption.
Michael Wilbon is right. You learn so many lessons from a young age in sports. Those lessons were ignored by Alabama getting in over Florida State.
College football is in a bad, bad place. Luckily, that’ll change next season when the playoff expands from four to 12 teams. In such circumstances, the Seminoles will get an automatic bid by winning their conference.
