Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent share Manchester City relegation verdict as ‘disgusting’ Everton FFP news emerges
Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent have been left in a rage at the latest charge against Everton, citing a lack of clarity on any potential punishment for Manchester City for their disgruntlement.
The Toffees have been referred to an independent commission by the Premier League for a second time this season having allegedly broken the league’s Profit and Sustainability rules, having already been given a 10-point deduction earlier this season for a separate breach – a punishment they have appealed against.
This punishment comes as Manchester City are still being investigated over an alleged 115 breaches, a decision Goldstein labelled “absolutely disgusting” as he called for Pep Guardiola’s side to be relegated from the Premier League.
Speaking on talkSPORT (15 January, 17:17) he said: “How do you think Everton and Nottingham Forest will be feeling knowing that Manchester City still have 115 cases hanging over them? I have to say that is absolutely disgusting that we’re not being told anything about what’s going on with Man City.”
Bent agreed saying: “That is a lot of cases, but Everton and Forest can’t look at it like that. I know something will happen to Man City, that will get dealt with but that doesn’t concern them.
“Right now, where they both are in the table, Everton 17th, on 17 points and Forest on 20 points in 15th. They’ll be looking at that going why have we allowed this to happen?”
Goldstein replied: “Do you think City have got a chance of being relegated straight away with 115 cases against them? They should be if they’re found guilty.”
Absolutely disgusting
It is absolutely ridiculous that in the span of just a few months, Everton have been charged twice for their breaches of financial fair play, but Manchester City have yet to hear back on any of their 115 charges.
In reality, Sean Dyche’s side have almost been charged twice for the same breach given the three-year period in which profit and sustainability rules work. There is absolutely no consistency in the policing of FFP rules in the Premier League.
Should the Toffees receive another point deduction, they will find themselves almost certainly relegated to the Championship, all while Guardiola’s side once again compete at the top of the Premier League table.
But as Bent suggested, the best thing the Toffees can do between now and the end of the season is focus on themselves. They’re in a relegation battle now and they need to quickly find a way out of that predicament.
