Ben Johnson transfer update as Manuel Pellegrini readies West Ham United raid
Former West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini is interested in bringing Ben Johnson to Real Betis this January, according to James Marshment.
The TEAMtalk journalist reported via X [15 January] that Pellegrini is ready to take Johnson from the London Stadium amid a lack of playing time for the 23-year-old.
It is understood that Leeds United have also been linked with a move for the defender, with Daniel Farke looking for a brand-new full-back at Elland Road.

“TEAMtalk understands that Real Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini is set to make a move to sign Ben Johnson from West Ham,” he said.
“The 23-year-old full-back has been reduced to a bit-part role this season and has also been linked with a move to Leeds this month.”
An easy decision
David Moyes has made it as clear as possible that Johnson is no longer in his plans this season, leaving the full-back to train and play with the academy teams at the beginning of the season.
With Vladimir Coufal needing rests throughout the season, Moyes has gradually gifted the 23-year-old minutes on the pitch but with the player’s contract situation still up in the air, Johnson’s time in London looks to be coming to a close.
Pellegrini has worked with Johnson before, taking the managerial reins for 18 months in between Moyes’ two tenures at the club, and is clearly a fan of the player if he wants him at Real Betis.
Injuries to Juan Miranda and Hector Bellerin could breathe life into Johnson’s career once again. But the most important thing for West Ham will be getting the right-back off their books and shipping the wages to someone else.
The player has asked for an even bigger wage if he is to sign a new contract with the Hammers, as per Claret & Hugh, a request that has not gone down well with the club.
